Experts say Levalbuterol Inhaler same as Albuterol

WorstPills.org recommends that patients using levalbuterol (Xopenex HFA) consider using the older and less expensive asthma inhaler albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin).

They also recommend that before stopping use of any drug, you should consult your physician. WorstPills.org reports that levalbuterol does not offer any benefits over albuterol; it just costs more.

The editors of the highly respected Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics, known for their independence from drug companies, first reviewed levalbuterol in 1999. They concluded their evaluation by saying that there was "no clinically significant advantage" over albuterol. Almost six years later, in their March 13, 2006 issue, Medical Letter reiterated those same sentiments in their review of levalbuterol HFA:

There is no convincing evidence that levalbuterol tartrate (XOPENEX HFA) offers any advantage over racemic [a technical term for the mixture of the two isomers of a drug] albuterol.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Amtrak

The family of a Denver man killed by a train near Las Vegas in September is suing Amtrak in state district court for wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional stress.

The family contends his line of sight was blocked by vegetation and he was therefore unable to see a fast approaching Amtrak train.

Fred Stark was killed on September 11 as he crossed the tracks near a city garbage station.

Amtrak, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, the City of Las Vegas, San Miguel County and Ride to Pride Partnership are listed as defendants in the suit filed in state district court last week.

A spokesman for Amtrak had no comment.

Another man was killed at the same crossing on Jan. 15.

Fentanyl Tablets Warning From FDA, Cephalon Oncology

The FDA has issued on its MedWatch page an announcement about the publication of two "Dear Healthcare Professional" letters from Cephalon Oncology about potential dangers of their fentanyl buccal tablets.

Fentora is manufactured by Cephalon oncology and is indicated in the treatment of breakthrough cancer pains. Fentanyl tablets are not appropriate for patients suffering from post-operative pains, but rather are designated only for those individuals who have exhausted all other forms of opiate therapy and are thus considered 'opioid-tolerant.'

Misapplication of Fentora and general inappropriate prescribing of fentanyl buccal tablets have been associated with severe respiratory depression and death in patients, therefore proper patient selection is paramount to reduce the risk of any catastrophic injury.

If you are taking Fentora tablets, please consult with your physician if you feel that you have been overprescribed, as you may run the risk of an overdose on this potent synthetic opioid.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Drugs, Medical Devices and Implants.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Courtney Mills

Mirror Tossed Out Window Causes Serious Injury

At first glance this seems to be a story of a college prank gone bad. But what if the injuries were more serious? Who's paying for the victim's medical bills? Is he employed and will this accident cause him to miss work?

There have been a lot of jokes circulating about the intelligence of 19-year old Rolf William Johnson. What was he thinking? Obviously, he wasn't. Typical of so many college students (drunk or sober), they have no concept of the consequences of a seemly innocent action. Now, we could argue that this is a freak accident; this is the one-time, foolish action of an immature young man who didn't mean to hurt anyone. Unfortunately, sometimes those are the exact circumstances that can lead to serious injury or even death.

Aside from the criminal charges, what some people might not understand is that Johnson could be held civilly accountable for the medical costs and lost wages that were the result of his reckless and negligent behavior.

And, what about the university? Should they be held accountable? Are the living conditions unsafe, especially if there has been a history of objects being tossed out of windows? Is this a premises liability case? Unfortunately, sometimes it takes someone getting injured or killed and a lawsuit for Corporate America (and in this case, the university, which whether they want to admit it or not, is a big business) to take note and make a change.

I'd say this is definitely the start of seven years bad luck for Rolf William Johnson.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Linda Snyder

Man indicted for fatal car accident

The Durango Herald reported yesterday that a Federal grand jury indicted a man in a tragic motor vehicle accident that killed two people just two months ago near Capote Lake.

The man, Jamie L. Wood, was indicted on two counts of vehicular homicide in the deaths of two women who were Southern Ute Indian Tribe members. Wood is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs, including marijuana and other substances.

Details of the accident on Colorado Highway 151, north of Ignacio, say that Wood's Plymouth Voyager van crossed over the center of the road to hit the victims' Lincoln Aviator head-on. The driver of the Lincoln escaped from his burning car without injury, but his wife and daughter were trapped inside and died.

Wood faces four to 12 years in prison for each of the deaths.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Zelnorm Back on the Market

The drug Zelnorm, manufactured by Novatis, was taken of the market in March because of a high risk of heart attacks, stroke, and chest pain. But now the FDA is allowing the irritable bowel syndrome drug to become available again, but only for a restricted access program. Zelnorm will remain off the market for the general public.

The program is for women in the US under 55 years of age who suffer from IBS with constipation or chronic idiopathic constipation, and for whom no other treatment has provided satisfactory relief, or patients who had satisfactory improvement of their symptoms with prior Zelnorm treatment.

The drug is back on the market because of complaints from doctors and patients of the Zelnorm's "marketing suspension". But now there are special requirements that have to be met to become a part of the drug's program. Users cannot have any known or pre-existing heart problems and must be in dire need of the drug.

The drug was removed because a review showed that Zelnorm users had a higher incidence of cardiovascular problems than did participants taking the placebo. Novartis claims that there is not causal relationship between Zelnorm and heart attack.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Drugs, Medical Devices, and Implants.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Deadly accident kills wife, mother

A married couple traveling to pick up their children from their grandmother's house ran off the road and into a ditch near midnight on Saturday, says a report from KJCT News 8 in Grand Junction. The motor vehicle accident involving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee killed the wife and injured the husband.

The story says the wife was driving and not wearing her seatbelt. It's possible that excessive speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors to the deadly accident. The husband said that they were lost and did not see the dead-end road in time to stop.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer
